candy hering
Veterans Advocate | Helena, Montana
Candy Hering served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2002 to 2007, deploying multiple times to regions where exposure to burn pits and other environmental hazards was common.
Reflecting on her service, Hering noted, “Burn pits and oil fields burning, tires burning … a lot of different diseases and environmental factors that we’re not necessarily used to being in here in America.”
After returning home and experiencing respiratory issues, Hering found clarity and support through the PACT Act, which expanded healthcare and benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances. Embracing her role as a department service officer for The American Legion Department of Montana, she now assists fellow veterans in navigating the complexities of filing PACT Act claims. Her dedication has brought long-overdue recognition and benefits to many, including the surviving spouse of a Vietnam veteran who had previously been denied support for Agent Orange exposure.
